Paul Stanley reveals his pick for KISS’ ‘legacy defining’ song

KISS’ Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons are set to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame Thursday in New York, and ahead of the honor, Stanley talked to New York Magazine about their music.

When asked which song he considers the band’s "legacy defining" tune, he said, "It’s hard not to go with 'Rock and Roll All Nite,'" the iconic track from their 1975 album Dressed To Kill.

"That song is really the template for a lot of songs that came after it, whether ours or other people’s, because it’s an anthem," he said. "When I started writing it, there were no 'anthems,' per se. Our record-company president sat us down and very fortuitously told us that we needed an anthem and we had no idea what that meant."

The song is known for its signature lyric, "I want to rock and roll all night, and party every day." Stanley said he always went with "I" and not "we" because "what empowers you is 'I.'"

"Partying didn’t mean pointed hats and fly whistles. It also wasn’t a drug-fueled social event," he said of the song's theme. "It was getting together with people and having a great time."

"So although it wouldn’t necessarily be my favorite song, its legacy is undeniable," he noted. "We’ve closed our shows for 50 years with that song because it encapsulates our ethos."

And while he said plenty of other artists have gone on to release songs with the theme of "lets get together and rock," Stanley's not one to stand up and take credit for influencing them.

He added, “That’s for me to know, but certainly not for me to announce. That’s too much self-aggrandizing for me."

Rush offered up some more surprises during the second night of their Fifty Something tour stop at the KIA Forum in Los Angeles.

During Sunday's opening night, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson kicked off the show's second set with three parts of their seven-part track, “2112.” For Tuesday's show, according to setlist.fm, they opened the set with all seven parts. They haven't performed three of those parts — “Discovery,” “Oracle: The Dream” and “Soliloquy” — live since 1997.

While the show had repeat performances of classics like “The Spirit of the Radio,” “Freewill,” “Limelight” and “Tom Sawyer,” Rush did break out some new songs during night two that they haven’t played in a while. Those include “The Trees” and “A Passage to Bangkok,” which they haven’t played since 2008; “Leave That Thing Alone” and "Witch Hunt," last played in 2011; and “The Analog Kid,” which they haven’t played since 2013.

They also performed “Finding My Way,” the lead-off track from their 1974 debut album, which they played at the 2026 Juno Awards in March, but prior to that hadn’t performed on tour since 1980.

Rush’s Fifty Something tour is their first tour since 2015’s R40 Live, and their first since the 2020 death of drummer Neil Peart. They return to the KIA Forum on Thursday.

A complete list of dates can be found at Rush.com.

Queen’s Roger Taylor is set to release the new solo album, Violence Insane in a Beautiful World, on Sept. 18. The record is his seventh solo album, and his first since 2021’s Outsider.

“There is a theme, you know, it's in the title really, what a beautiful world we live in, don't f*** it up,” Taylor says of the record. “There seems to be all this insanity at the moment. The violence in the world seems to be as bad as it ever was, at any point, and certainly in my lifetime. It's just horrific, a lot of insane violence. And we do seem to be f***** up the world, plastics in the sea, you know, and all these awful wars everywhere and hatred born of different religions.”

Despite that, Taylor notes, “It's a beautiful world, you know. And kindness is very important, I think, it seems to be forgotten quite a lot. So, that is basically the sort of underlying theme.”

Taylor offers up the first preview of the record with the release of the single “Come On Summer (It’s Time To Party)” featuring The Ndlovu Youth Choir from Limpopo, South Africa. It is available now via digital outlets.

If you’re worried that Sam Mendes’ four Beatles films may get a bit repetitive, one of the actors in those films is here to ease your mind.

Adam Pally, who plays controversial music exec and one-time Beatles manager Allen Klein in the films, reveals in a new interview with The Direct that each film will be unique.

When asked to explain how different he thinks the films will be, Pally was careful with his answer, but did offer some insight.

"I will try to answer in the most allowed way possible, but I would say that they are totally different,” he said. “The way The Beatles were individually, totally different, and the movies reflect each Beatles' tone, in a way."

"So, they all go together beautifully, and then they also are all individually perfect in that way, you know?" he added.

The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event is set to open in April 2028. It stars Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

The Sony films will mark the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and The Beatles have granted a studio the rights to the life stories of band members and their legendary catalog of music.

Stephen Bishop to reissue debut album, 'Careless', for 50th anniversary

Stephen Bishop's 'Careless' (Life’s A Bish Records)

Singer/songwriter Stephen Bishop is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his debut album, Careless.

The 74-year-old musician is set to reissue Careless on Aug. 14, featuring two unreleased bonus tracks, “Back Again” and “I Don’t Know You Anymore,” both of which were written during the Careless era.

The original album, released in October 1976, featured Bishop’s iconic song “On and On,” which peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as “Save it for a Rainy Day,” which was a top-40 hit.

Bishop was joined by several guests on the album, including Eric Clapton, who had a guitar solo on “Save it for a Rainy Day” and also appeared on “Sinking in an Ocean of Tears.” Chaka Khan and Art Garfunkel also guested on the record.

“I can’t believe it. It feels like it was just 1976 yesterday,” Bishop says. “This album has meant so much to me over the years, and I’m very grateful it has meant so much to so many people. It felt like the right time to finally share more of that story, and the songs that didn’t make the album the first time … they’ve waited long enough.”

The anniversary edition has been pressed on limited-edition confetti splatter vinyl. It comes with a 20-page booklet with rare and previously unseen photos, Stephen’s first-ever liner notes and more.

Careless (50th Anniversary Edition) is available for preorder now.

War’s 'Greatest Hits' to be reissued for 50th anniversary

War's 'Greatest Hits' (Rhino)

War’s 1976 Greatest Hits compilation is getting a special reissue for its 50th anniversary.

The new release is part of Rhino’s Spirit of ’76 campaign, which celebrates the albums that defined America’s Bicentennial.

Greatest Hits features such classic War tunes as “The World is a Ghetto,” “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” and “Low Rider,” as well as “Summer,” which was recorded specifically for the original release.

“It marked the first time a new song was included on a Greatest Hits album and went on to become a greatest hit itself,” War’s longtime producer Jerry Goldstein says of the album. “We recorded ‘Summer’ while assembling the original compilation, which makes this 50th Anniversary edition the most authentic and complete version of our Greatest Hits.”

The 50th anniversary edition will be released July 31 on 180-gram black vinyl, along with an expanded CD, which adds tracks “Spill the Wine,” “Don’t Let No One Get You Down,” "So” and “Galaxy.” It is available for preorder now.

War is set to hit the road on their Greatest Hits tour this summer. The trek begins July 4 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A complete list of dates can be found at war.com.

Country star Jackson Dean honors Gregg Allman in song for 'Music of My Soul' documentary

'Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul' (Subtext/Rolling Stone Films)

The Gregg Allman documentary The Music of My Soul premieres Tuesday in New York City, and while there's bound to be plenty of Allman Brothers Band music in the film, there will also be a new track by country star Jackson Dean.

The tune, "My Cross to Bear," will close the film. Director James Keach enlisted Grammy-winning music maker Julian Raymond to create the track.

Ultimately, the tune is Jackson's tribute to the man behind the Allman Brothers Band and iconic songs like "Midnight Rider," 'Whipping Post" and "I'm No Angel."

“Gregg Allman lived a life that was so much larger than life, both the highs and the lows, and to sing a song that represents all of that is a lot," Jackson says. "For me, I wanted to honor him, put everything I had, all that I know about living between the cracks and on those blazing stages into it. But I also knew I wanted to just let the power of who he was move through me and not think … just be."

“He was an influence and hero to anyone who loves the blues, who chooses to live this life," Jackson adds. "He was so much more than a song, an album or even the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and it’s all there when you hear him sing. He wrote some of the greatest Southern rock songs ever, but it’s not the words, it’s what’s in the notes when he sings them.”

After the Big Apple premiere, Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul travels to Macon, Georgia, for a hometown opening on Thursday. It will also have one-week exclusive engagements in Los Angeles and New York, before playing in theaters nationwide on June 17.

John Fogerty on being left off 'The New York Times'' greatest American living songwriters list: 'It happens'

John Fogerty is set to receive the Johnny Mercer Award, the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s highest honor, on Thursday in New York City. And yet with a career that includes iconic tunes like “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Fortunate Son” and more, Fogerty was recently left off The New York Times’ list of the 30 greatest living American songwriters, something he doesn’t seem too upset about.

Asked about the snub by The Hollywood Reporter, Fogerty replied, “I mean, I would’ve been shocked but a lot of people weren’t mentioned. There’s only 30, and you have to be alive. It’s pretty tough.”

Along with Fogerty, artists like Billy Joel, Randy Newman and Stevie Nicks were left off the list.

“The funny thing is that everybody sees this through their own lens,” he continued. “There were all kinds of other really deserving people that weren’t on that list either.”

“It happens," he adds. "Rolling Stone releases a list of the greatest records of all time. As time goes on, the records that I love or the artists that I love, more and more of them would be dropped away for newer things because the voters get younger and they vote for what they like. It’s kind of a natural progression.”

John Fogerty's Legacy tour hits Lincoln, California, on June 26, and he has September dates booked with Steve Winwood. A complete list can be found at JohnFogerty.com.

In new video message, Billy Joel urges, 'Knicks in 4!'

Billy Joel is in a New York sports fan state of mind.

The New York Knicks come home to Madison Square Garden Monday night to continue their quest for their first championship since 1973. And since Billy spent 10 years as one of the Garden's most high-profile residents, he's posted a video message on Instagram cheering them on.

"Hi, the New York Knicks," he says. "I've seen a lot of magic happen in this building for many years. But now it's your turn to bring the championship back to the greatest city in the world: New York. Go for it!"

As he and the people surrounding him begin to clap and cheer, we see the words "Knicks in 4!"

On Saturday night, Billy was back home in Long Island, New York, helping to induct his longtime booking agent, Dennis Arfa, into the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame. Billy was a surprise guest, and in his speech, he said Arfa was the one who came up with the idea to have him play Carnegie Hall and Yankee Stadium, the idea of him doing the final shows at Shea Stadium prior to its demolition, the idea of him doing co-headline tours with Elton John and the concept of his Madison Square Garden residency.

The induction was part of the Hall of Fame's Billy Joel Symposium, which featured two days of speakers.
