Movie Review: “The Maze Runner” (Rated PG-13)

Fox(NEW YORK) -- Welcome to the weekly post-apocalyptic dystopian young-adult novel film adaptation review! Featured in this edition: The Maze Runner, a movie and story that finds its roots in Lord of the Flies, Peter Pan, and the more contemporary belief that we’re all screwed.

The Maze Runner starts out by teasing us, immediately throwing us into the action as we witness a tattered young man (Dylan O’Brien, MTV’s Teen Wolf) struggling to find a way out of a large, gated elevator ascending an industrial-type elevator shaft. It’s intense, claustrophobic and intriguing. When he gets to the top, a hatch opens and he’s greeted by a multi-ethnic group of other young men, who help him from the elevator, whereupon he immediately runs -- and falls.

Turns out, this young man has no idea who he is (his name is Thomas, he soon learns) or what he’s doing in this place, which is called the Glade: part forest, part jungle, surrounded by four thick concrete walls and with only one large opening that leads to a complex, ever-shifting maze -- a door that opens in the morning and closes at night.  That maze may, or may not, be the only way out of the Glade, but it’s full of Grievers -- giant, spider-like creatures that sting their prey.  Even with the danger, a few select young men explore and map the maze. They’re called runners, quite a few of whom went into the maze and never came back.

Other than his name, Thomas may not remember exactly who he is, but his motivation to leave the Glade and find out who put him there is strong enough to compel him to run into the maze with little thought or fear.  That courage earns him a place with the runners.  But can he find a way out?

The dizzying introduction to this particular world is unexpectedly fantastic. After that, however, it takes a while for The Maze Runner to build the momentum needed to get back to that emotional level.  That said, while The Maze Runner isn’t going to make anyone forget The Hunger Games, it’s a well-executed story, and fine performances from O’Brien, Will Poulter as a tough-guy Glade elder, and Ameen Aml as the Glade leader, give it considerable gravitas that, in the end, helps pack that emotional punch.

Three-and-a-half out of five stars.

Melissa Rivers Thanks Fans for Support Following Mother's Death

D Dipasupil/FilmMagic(NEW YORK) -- Melissa Rivers has posted a message to her fans on WhoSay thanking them for their support in the wake of her mother Joan Rivers' death on Sept. 4.

In a statement that represents her first public comments since her mother's funeral, Rivers writes, "As my son Cooper and I mourn the loss of my mother, we want to thank everyone for the beautiful cards and flowers conveying heartfelt messages and condolences, which continue to arrive from around the world and through social media. My mother would have been overwhelmed by the scope and depth of the love that people have expressed for her. It is certainly helping to lift our spirits during this time."

She adds, "We are forever grateful for your kindness and support in continuing to honor my mother’s legacy, and for remembering the joy and laughter that she brought to so many."

In honor of the late comic, E! will air a day-long Fashion Police marathon Friday. Joan Rivers Biography Set for 2016

Charles Sykes/Bravo(NEW YORK) -- Fans of Joan Rivers can remember the late comedy icon as Little, Brown & Co. announced that they're set to publish a biography about her life.

According to Deadline.com, veteran journalist Leslie Bennetts will pen the currently untitled biography.

"Joan Rivers’ life story was…characterized by triumphant highs and devastating lows, one that is both wildly entertaining and deeply moving," Bennetts said in a statement. "But Rivers’ career was also enormously significant in American cultural history, breaking down barriers for women in television and comedy and continually redefining the acceptable boundaries of truth-telling for women in public life."

"It’s hard to imagine a more compelling subject for a book -- or one that would be more fun," the Vanity Fair contributing editor continued.

Rivers' biography will hit shelves in 2016.

Rivers died September 4, after doctors put her in a medically-induced coma after she went into cardiac arrest during a endoscopy procedure.

Meredith Vieira Shares Her Experience with Domestic Violence

Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Meredith Vieira tackled the topic of domestic violence by sharing a personal story.

On Wednesday's episode of her talk show, Vieira discussed experiences she had with an abusive boyfriend many years ago.

"It started out with, we’d have a fight and he’d just sort of grab my arm. I didn’t think a lot about it, and then it turned into pushing me against the wall and then it went beyond that to actually taking his hand and grabbing my face and saying, ‘I could ruin your career if I wanted to and no one would want you,'" she revealed.

"Then there was the night that, we shared an apartment, and he threw me into a shower, naked in scalding water and then he threw me outside into the hallway, we lived in an apartment building, and I hid in the stairwell for two hours until he came again crying, and said, ‘I promise I won’t do this again.’ And I continued to stay in that relationship until I was offered a job in another state and that’s where I felt I had the ability to get away."

Vieira, 60, is now happily married to her husband of 29 years, journalist Richard Cohen. They have three children.

However, the experience helped shape the talk show host, who admitted that leaving her abusive ex was difficult.

"I’m a smart woman. A lot of people say, Well, who would stay in that situation? Somebody who doesn’t have the wherewithal to get out, the means to get out. I had that," she said. "Part of it was fear. I was scared of him and scared if I tried to leave something worse could happen to me. Part of it was guilt because every time we would have a fight he would then start crying and say, ‘I promise I won’t do it again’ and I would feel like maybe I contributed somehow to this."

Still, she encouraged others who have suffered at the hands of an abusive partner to seek help. And everyone, she said, should be aware of this "rampant" issue.

"We all have to accept the fact that it’s not just an issue with the NFL, it’s an issue with all of our lives," she said. "Until we take it seriously more and more women are going to get abused."

Ben Affleck Cops to Counting Cards, Wishes Casinos Tossed Him Out

Jason Merritt/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- In an interview in the October issue of Details, Ben Affleck drew some parallels between his life and the life of his character in the upcoming movie Gone Girl -- at least in the way tabloids can play fast and loose with the truth.

In the movie, he plays a man whose wife goes missing, making for a juicy story for the 24-hour news cycle.

However, the Oscar winner does admit headlines earlier this year that he'd been booted from Las Vegas' Hard Rock Casino for counting cards were right, albeit partially.

"I mean, that took place. I took some time to learn the game...And once I became decent, the casinos asked me not to play blackjack. I mean, the fact that being good at the game is against the rules at the casinos should tell you something about casinos," the Argo director and Batman v. Superman star says.

"[T]hey don't even want you to have a sporting chance, really. There's a lot of hospitality, backslapping, when they think you're gonna come in and dump money, and if they think you might leave with some money, it's like, 'You know what? Why don't you try craps or roulette?'"

Ben also hit back at tabloid allegations that he was a compulsive gambler, offering, "I had always liked blackjack. I don't play any other games of chance. I don't bet on football games, and I don't gamble at all, really, outside of that. But I knew with blackjack that there's a way you can improve your odds. And so I started trying to learn...I tend to get myopic and get into one thing...And then get bored and switch to something else."

While counting cards isn't illegal, most casinos will stop card sharks from doing so -- and such was the case with Affleck. He jokes he wished he'd been physically tossed from the establishment, as some accounts painted it. "No, I wish! That would be awesome," he says, "'Get him outta here! He's a magician!' Unfortunately, they just came up and said, 'We can't let you play blackjack. But we have other table games! We have Chinese poker!'"

As for reports Ben's wife Jennifer Garner was indignant at the incident and his gambling, he said, "See, that's tabloid s**t. That's all bulls**t. They completely lie. I mean, I can show you 10 articles of Star and OK! -- those magazines feel totally comfortable absolutely fictionalizing every single element of the story...My only hope is that people with any common sense recognize that those stories are false."

Gone Girl, based on the Gillian Flynn bestseller of the same name and directed by The Social Network's David Fincher, opens Oct. 3.

Math Teacher Becomes Third-Ever $1 Million Winner on "Wheel of Fortune"

Photo by Doug Benc/Getty Images for PLAYERS INC(NEW YORK) --  A middle school math teacher from Maryland joined an exclusive club Wednesday night, becoming only the third person to win the $1 million grand prize on Wheel of Fortune.

Sarah Manchester of Silver Spring, Maryland, solved the winning puzzle -- the phrase “loud laughter” -- on the episode that aired Wednesday night during the show’s Teacher’s Week. In order to get to that bonus round, Manchester had to solve the prize puzzle, winning a trip to the Dominican Republic, and then also solved the third Toss Up Puzzle: “The Pacific Ocean.”

Manchester’s total take was $1,017,490 in the hotly-contested game.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime event,” an excited Manchester said after her win. “I’m just soaking in every minute of it!”

The episode was filmed earlier this year.

“Teacher’s Week” kicked off the 32nd season of the show.

“What a way to start the season,” the show’s co-host, Pat Sajak, said after Manchester’s win.

Manchester teaches and coaches the math team at Takoma Park Middle School in Montgomery County, Maryland. When she was growing up, she watched Wheel of Fortune with her parents and now challenges her own children with cash prizes for each puzzle they’re able to solve before she does.

Wheel of Fortune introduced the million-dollar grand prize wedge in 2008. If a contestant collects the wedge, solves the puzzle and makes it to the Bonus Round without being bankrupted, the top $100,000 cash prize is replaced by $1 million on the Bonus Round wheel, according to a release from the show. The previous million-dollar grand prize winners are Michelle Lowenstein, who won in 2008, and Autumn Erhard, who collected her prize in 2013.

At the end of Wednesday night’s show, Sajak asked Manchester whether she had used her math skills to calculate the probability of winning the million-dollar prize. She replied: “I assessed that the probability was low, but even unlikely events sometimes happen!”

"The Princess Bride" Actor Cary Elwes Details Andre the Giant's 'Extraordinary' Drinking Ability

Photo By Russell Turiak/Getty Images(NEW YORK) --  Much has been written about wrestler André the Giant's ability to consume copious amounts of liquor.

It's true, his Princess Bride co-star Cary Elwes said.

"The man was extraordinary. He was absolutely a man who could consume vast amounts of alcohol and not have it affect him at all. I’ve never seen anything like it," Elwes, who played Westley in the film, told the Daily Beast.

"I went drinking with him after our first screening in New York, and I was sipping a beer all night -- which he thought was very funny. There was no way I was going to compete with that, because I knew he could consume 100 beers in one sitting."

André the Giant, who died of heart failure in 1993, weighed more than 500 pounds and was 7-foot-4. Because of his size and his physically strenuous job as a wrestler, the late star was in great pain, Elwes said, and drinking was a way to numb it.

"He was due to have an operation right after the shoot, and his doctor didn’t know what kind of pain medication to give him because of his size, so the only way that he could deal with the pain was to drink alcohol," he explained. "It didn’t affect him at all. He didn’t flub a line or miss a day. The guy could handle his liquor, let me tell ya."

His drink of choice? A concoction called "The American": 40 ounces of different liquors poured into a pitcher.

Elwes said that the actor would consume several of these throughout the course of an evening.

"I’ve never tasted airplane fuel, but I imagine it’s very close to what that must taste like. It’s very potent indeed," Elwes recalled. "But to him, it was like chugging water."

Bill Hader to Return to "Saturday Night Live" as a Host

Ben Gabbe/NBC(NEW YORK) -- After leaving Saturday Night Live last year following eight years on the hit NBC sketch-comedy show, Bill Hader is returning to the series.

NBC announced Wednesday that Hader will return to SNL as a host on Oct. 11. He'll be joined by musical guest Hozier.

This may be good news for fans who miss Hader's signature character, Stefon.

He recently joked on ABC's Good Morning America that viewers "will never see him again. No, I'm joking.  I don't know. I do miss him."

Previously, Hader told GQ magazine that he was done for good with Stefon, the infamous club kid with insider knowledge of the most ridiculous hot spots in New York City.

"Sometimes people say to me, 'I want a Stefon movie!' and I’m like, you think you want a Stefon movie, but then you’ll see the poster for it and think, 'Wait, I don’t want this!'" he said. "There’s no emotional through-line."

Hader is currently starring with another SNL alum, Kristen Wiig, in the film The Skeleton Twins.

Chris Pratt hosts the season premiere of SNL on Sept. 27.

Neil Patrick Harris Reveals Details About His Wedding

ABC/Lou Rocco(NEW YORK) -- Neil Patrick Harris stopped by ABC's The View Wednesday and revealed all the details of his Italian wedding to David Burtka, which took place earlier in the month.

"We've been together over 10 years and I think when our kids got to the age they were having reasonable conversations, when they are asking lots of why questions, to have a clear-cut explanation of who their daddy is, I think is great," Harris said of why he tied the knot. "He's my husband and it was easier than partner or boyfriend or something like that."

The former How I Met Your Mother star said only about 45 people were at the wedding and "I just wanted to be able to say nice things about David, to David, in front of the people that matter the most to us. It was less about a proclamation and more of a declaration."

Harris, 41, and Burtka have been together since 2004 and their twins via a surrogate -- Gideon Scott, a boy, and Harper Grace, a girl -- were born in 2010. The wedding was at a rented castle, where they also had Elton John perform.

"It was so crazy, because when you watch other people say their vows and get all chocked up, you say 'Come on! Pull it together man,'" Harris added. "Then when you are standing there and it's you and you have this piece of paper in your hand and it's shaking ... you can't help but just get super-duper chocked up."

Harris also explained how his daughter was the flower girl and his son was supposed to be the ring bearer, but he decided he wanted to be "the orange boy" and hand out oranges to the guests.

"We said, 'What is an orange boy?' and he explained this whole thing where he comes down with a basket of oranges," Harris said. "Then, we were trying to find a plan like we'll tie the rings to an orange."

While Harris was originally worried about his son doing the "orange thing," he quickly learned during the wedding, it was his daughter, Harper, who caused a bit of a fuss when the wedding was about to begin and she was to throw the flowers.

After the wedding director said it was time for Harper to go, Harris said, "She doesn't go, she won't go. She panics and she's refusing to go and she's clinging to legs and she's starting to cry and we're all stressed like, 'You have to go now, we've timed this to the sunset.'"

"I say, 'David, let's just pick her up and we'll all go together.' Then David says, 'Well, if Gideon goes first, then will you go?' Gideon goes, 'OK' and he picked up his little orange basket and by himself, he walked confidently all the way down 20 steps, got halfway and just stopped!' And we're behind, 'You can do it buddy, you got this!' And he just took a breath and he walked all the way down," he said.

Harris said Gideon ended up handing out the oranges and it was "very special."

Kim Kardashian Is 'Trying' to Get Pregnant

Timothy White/E!(NEW YORK) -- Kim Kardashian is hoping to get pregnant again very soon, she said.

"We're trying," she told Australia's Today morning program of her and husband Kanye West's efforts to have another child. "It's all in God's hands."

Kardashian, 33, and West, 37, who said "I do" this past May, welcomed their daughter North West in June 2013.

Becoming a mother changed her life, Kardashian said.

"Everything's put into perspective," she said. "Nothing really matters besides spending time with your family and only doing things that are really important to you."

West has also been a big influence on her, she said, especially when it comes to her style. Since she began dating him two years ago, she stopped working with a stylist, instead relying on her husband's advice.

The results? More recognition for her fashion evolution, she said.

"I love just the way he dresses and he is a great designer and he gives me amazing style tips," she gushed. "It's been so great."

Taylor Swift Named "People" Magazine's Best Dressed of 2014

Oliver Hardt/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Taylor Swift not only kills it on the red carpet, she kills it every time she steps outside her New York City apartment. That's why the always-pulled-together singer has been named People magazine's Best Dressed for 2014.

As People notes, the singer has "truly hit her style stride in the past 12 months," sporting amazing designer gowns at industry events, and chic casual ensembles on the street.  She even looks great coming from the gym.

Her BFF, supermodel Karli Kloss, tells the magazine, "She's got great style. I need to take some notes from her!"

Taylor herself tells People, "I’m more willing to take a risk this year than ever before,” and describes her style as “feminine, leggy and ever-changing.”

As far as other musical performers go, People magazine also singles out Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez on its Best-Dressed top-10 list, which is unranked. The mag calls Rihanna "the biggest risk-taker," offering as evidence the see-through gown she wore to accept her Fashion Icon award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.  Speaking about his client's fashion choices, Rihanna's stylist tells the magazine, "Being sexy is totally a part of it. It’s also about having fun, though, and just experimenting with fashion."

As for that ageless beauty J-Lo, the magazine says, "[She] has yet to meet a skin-baring trend she doesn't like…or can't pull off."  Her stylists tell the magazine, "She looks phenomenal in everything, so we get to have more fun playing with her looks rather than analyzing what needs to be avoided."

People mag also inducts some Best Dressed Couples into its Style Hall of Fame, and Adam Levine and his supermodel wife Behati Prinsloo are among them, as are John Legend and his supermodel wife, Chrissy Teigen.  Voice coach and country star Blake Shelton and his wife, fellow country star Miranda Lambert, also made the cut.

Bryan Cranston Helps MLB Promote Playoffs with 'One-Man Show'

Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- After playing meth dealer Walter White in the AMC series Breaking Bad and President Lyndon B. Johnson in the Broadway play All the Way, what's next for Bryan Cranston? A one-man show that salutes Major League Baseball's playoffs.

In a new six-minute ad for TBS' upcoming postseason coverage, we're treated to a behind-the-scenes look at Cranston's faux one-man show on the national pastime. The Emmy winner mimics World Series heroes Carlton Fisk and Kirk Gibson, and spoofs various baseball clichés.

Perhaps the funniest moment comes when Cranston, wearing an Oakland A's uniform, dramatically recites the lyrics to "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."

TBS' coverage of the Major League Baseball playoffs begins Sept. 30.

Kanye West on Wheelchair Incident: 'Pick a New Target'

Larry Busacca/Getty Images for MTV(NEW YORK) -- Kanye West is tired of being picked on.

The rapper said he’s being unfairly “demonized” by the media after he made headlines for reportedly demanding that one of his concertgoers in a wheelchair stand up.

A video from the concert last Friday in Sydney, Australia, actually shows the rapper urging the entire audience onto its feet for “Good Life.”

“I can’t do this show until everybody stand up,” the rapper is heard saying, “unless you got a handicap pass and you get special parking and s***.”

When only a single fan remained seated, the crowd began booing and chanting, “Stand up,” until West sent his bodyguard to investigate that, yes, the person was in a wheelchair.

Without apology, Kanye went on to perform.

Despite the backlash that followed, his wife, Kim Kardashian, doesn’t think her husband has anything to apologize for.

Along with a clip she posted on Instagram from his concert Monday night, she wrote, “What an amazing Australian tour! Its frustrating that something so awesome could be clouded by lies in the media. Kanye never asked anyone in a wheel chair to stand up & the audience videos show that. He asked for everyone to stand up & dance UNLESS they were in a wheel chair. #JustWantedEveryoneToHaveAFunNight #TheMediaTwistsThings.”

West defended himself at Monday’s show in Brisbane, Australia, according to a video from the concert.

After calling out morning talk show hosts for making the incident into “such big media-press-news,” he admonished them to “take a step back and look at this.”

He added, “I’m a married Christian man with a family. At my concerts, I make sure everybody has as good a time as possible. So all this demonizing me, it ain’t going to work after a while. Pick a new target. Pick a new target. Because I’m not one of these dumb*** artists that you’re used to. You come at me, I’m going to take my platform and break this s*** down for real, intelligent people every night. And then, we’ll get back to the music.”

Sharon Osbourne Goes On Twitter Rant Against U2

James White/CBS(NEW YORK) -- Sharon Osbourne is clearly not a U2 fan. The 61-year-old co-host of The Talk and wife of rocker Ozzy Osbourne took to Twitter to voice her opinion of the Irish rock band on Monday.

In the wake of U2's partnership with Apple to release its new album Songs of Innocence for free, Osbourne tweeted, "U2 you are business moguls not musicians anymore.  No wonder you have to give your mediocre music away for free cause no one wants to buy it."

Sharon -- who manages Ozzy and created Ozzfest -- questioned, "Guys nothing is for free, how much you making?" She added, "PS, btw you are just a bunch of middle age political groupies..."

Sharon continued, "Whose political ass are we going to pull you out of today? Or are you front row at another tragic fashion show?...Jimmy Iovine, iTunes, U2, you're a bunch of megalomaniacs. F*** YOU!"

Later Monday night, Sharon tweeted a link to her followers to remove the band's album from their iTunes accounts.  She wrote, "Here's how to say NO to @U2's new record that was forced upon you by @iTunes - #NoThankU2."
